In Zambia, we have many brave warriors living with sickle cell disease. One inspiring example is Harriet Sakala, a clinical officer by profession. Despite her struggles, Harriet continues to inspire others with her strength and resilience, never allowing the condition to stop her from following her dreams. Sickle cell disease is a genetic disorder that affects haemoglobin production, leading to misshapen red blood cells, painful crises, anaemia, increased risk of infections, and even organ damage. Thousands of children in Zambia are affected, making it crucial to debunk myths surrounding the condition. Contrary to common misconceptions, children with sickle cell can grow up to be successful adults, and they will not necessarily become paralysed.
Our healthcare system is equipped to help, with doctors, clinical officers, nurses, and other medical practitioners providing regular check-ups, special medicine, healthy lifestyle tips, and pain management. Zambia has made significant strides in caring for sickle cell warriors, and with proper care, they can lead fulfilling lives. Supporting those affected helps break down stigmas, encourages research, and strengthens healthcare.
To become a champion for sickle cell warriors, you can join awareness campaigns, speak out against myths, share knowledge, and show love and compassion. Every small step counts, and together. We can make a difference. Recognising the bravery and resilience of those living with sickle cell disease inspires others to join the fight.
Let us celebrate their strength and work towards building a supportive community.
