Youths appreciating men’s clinics in schools

Learners in Chongwe District are now freely visiting clinics to access sexual and reproductive health services following the introduction of men’s clinics in schools. According to youth activist Joel Chinyanta, young people were previously hesitant to openly visit medical facilities before these clinics were established.

Mr Chinyanta explained in an interview that youth clubs have been set up at Jatame and Smart Secondary Schools, as well as Matipula Primary School. These clubs provide learners with training in teenage reproductive health and other important life skills. He noted that the initiative encourages young people to seek proper medical services instead of relying on herbal remedies, which is common in rural areas.

He added that the programmes also promote male circumcision as a way of reducing HIV infections and cancer rates. In addition, boys’ clubs are used to educate learners about gender-based violence and its consequences, helping boys learn to respect females and become responsible role models as they grow.

According to Mr Chinyanta, the response from the boys has been overwhelming. Teachers have reported positive behavioural changes, with previously unruly boys becoming more disciplined and showing greater respect towards their female classmates. He further expressed happiness that learners’ academic performance has improved, as they are now more focused in class.

Mr Chinyanta observed that common challenges among learners have included alcohol abuse, child marriages, and fights, which he believes may stem from abusive backgrounds and other social factors. Having received training from the Zambia Men’s Network for Gender and Development, he now counsels men and boys affected by gender-based violence and other vices at a one-stop centre in Chongwe
