DAMA Musonda’s journey from Choma to the United States of America is an inspiration to the youth and testimony that talent can make one to dine with kings. Rising basketball star Ndama began his career at a tender age with Midlands Basketball Association (MBA) league outfit Munali Suns basketball team. His passion for the sport manifested when he was still in his formative stage, and he quickly attracted the attention of coaches from various clubs.
Musonda, who was born on March 16, 2005 said he has always loved basketball and enjoys playing as a point guard but can switch sometimes to play in the position of a shooting guard. “When I was very young I played football. I was actually a good goalkeeper. I switched to basketball in 2017 when I was invited for a game by one of my friends Danny Namoobe. A year later I moved to Lusaka where I ended up joining Huskies Basketball Club,” Ndama said.
As he continued honing his career, teams in the Super League noticed his talent and started jostling for his signature but it was Munali Suns Basketball Club eventually won the battle. Ndama was attracted to Munali because they put on the table the best deal having offered to pay his school fees in exchange for his services on the court. Ndama then got a transfer from Choma Secondary School to Chilenje High School where he combined education and sport. In his fourth season, Munali’s faith in the towering player paid off when they won the Midlands Basketball Association (MBA) league title as well as the Zambia Basketball Federation (ZBF) national championship in 2022.
“Winning the MBA league title and the National Championship in the same year was one of my highlights in my career, I feel that was a great season for everyone at the club. I feel my time at Suns opened doors for me, I thank them for giving me an opportunity to play the sport I love so much,” he said.
Winning a double only motivated Ndama to work harder and in 2023, he caught the interest of international scouts, who facilitated his scholarship to Balboa Academy in Florida, United States of America where he is currently flourishing. On the academic side, Ndama wants to follow the footsteps of his father Musonda by studying Agriculture Science as he hopes to contribute to the development of agriculture in the country. With the determination that Ndama has exhibited so far, it is safe to say the best is yet to come for him.
