Youth in Zambia make up approximately 66% of the population, with more than half under the age of 24. With such a significant youthful population, their development has a direct impact on the country’s economic future. Young people are not merely participants in national development; they are essential assets in innovation and entrepreneurship, driving progress and shaping what lies ahead.

However, personal development is often overlooked in discussions around youth empowerment and career growth. While attention is usually placed on immediate economic opportunities and educational attainment, the deeper and more transformative aspects of personal growth remain undervalued. Without a solid foundation in personal development, young people may struggle to navigate challenges, set and achieve goals, or adapt to changing circumstances. In some cases, individuals attribute their failures to circumstances inherited from previous decades, when in reality, the issue may be a lack of self-development. As the saying goes, nothing follows you more closely than the previous decade of your life.

This conversation is particularly crucial for young people in Zambia, as it lays the groundwork for future success and well-being. Growing a business is a top priority for many entrepreneurs today, yet modern businesses and startups are about more than systems and business models. Focusing solely on the company is not the most effective way to achieve growth because at the heart of innovation, creativity, and prosperity lies a deeper concept: knowledge of self and continuous development.

Even in entrepreneurship, values, virtue, and personal growth are just as important as technical skills. Time and again, it has been proven that working on oneself makes a difference in every area of life. Without the individual, a business cannot function, and if the entrepreneur is not striving toward their best potential, the business has little chance of reaching its own. Personal development increases self-awareness and helps individuals understand what works best for them and their enterprises.

Strategy, which is essential for success, only emerges from a clear understanding of oneself, one’s business, and the surrounding environment. One major reason entrepreneurship among youth often fails to thrive is the lack of appreciation for personal value and uniqueness. Many young entrepreneurs overlook the importance of cultivating their inner strengths and move no further than survival-based “hustle” thinking, rather than pursuing intentional growth.

When individuals place value on themselves, that growth spills over into their businesses. Whatever one insists on in life is reflected back, and insisting on personal growth naturally leads to business growth. Values, character, personality, and mindset influence everything from customer service and work ethic to strategy and decision-making. Identifying one’s “why” is therefore one of the most crucial elements in both life and business.

Personal development for entrepreneurs involves deep self-awareness, growth as an individual, and growth as a leader. As self-understanding increases, so does clarity on what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. Timing and seasons matter in business, just as they do in life. With this awareness, entrepreneurs place themselves in positions where they are most effective, freeing time and energy to focus on building strong brands.

Running a business as a young entrepreneur is challenging, with new obstacles appearing daily. These challenges demand strength, resilience, and clarity, all of which come from understanding oneself. Without this self-knowledge, both life and entrepreneurship become more difficult. This is why maintaining a clear sense of purpose—your “why”—is essential.

Business and personal growth are deeply interconnected, constantly shaping who we are. As young people, we evolve not only in our careers but also in our personalities. In Zambia, personal development is often influenced by family expectations, social norms, and financial pressures. While these forces can be destabilizing, they also test resilience and can shape more adaptive and innovative leaders when personal growth is embraced.

Many successful young entrepreneurs today understand their brands deeply, allowing their systems to function effectively. They are continuously growing and developing. In contrast, many businesses have failed due to neglected personal development, poor character, or damaging attitudes. Business success depends on far more than technical skills alone.

As young entrepreneurs, it is important to recognize that businesses thrive on the individual behind them. This includes attitudes toward failure and money, perceptions of life, relationships, habits, routines, environments, and mental discipline. All of these factors are subconsciously carried into the brand being built.

Before checking profits or technical indicators, entrepreneurs should first check themselves and align their personal growth with their business goals. Our greatest injury is often the one we inflict upon ourselves. Addressing this with care preserves inner freedom, which no one can take away.

Real living is about making choices, consciously or subconsciously. Young people must intentionally choose self-development and remain informed as though their businesses depend on it—because they do. Growth fuels innovation, diversification, and strategic thinking. Comparisons with others should be avoided, as understanding one’s identity, niche, and purpose is far more powerful.

Ultimately, young entrepreneurs are encouraged to grow, learn new skills, invest in meaningful relationships, guard their integrity, manage time wisely, reconcile their past, and develop their personalities. The legacy of tomorrow is built through the small, consistent actions of today.
