A T JUST 20 years old, singer and songwriter Agness Zian Bwalya, known by her stage name Zian SZ, is already making waves in the Zambian music industry. Zian’s musical journey started when she was just 7 years old, singing in church and Sunday school. “Music is in my blood,” she says. “Growing up in a musical family, I was surrounded by aunts who sang and uncles who played instruments. It became a part of who I am.” From a young age, Zian has been no stranger to the stage. One of her favorite memories was performing at the Sky Girls Festival in 2022. “The outpouring of love I received from young girls, just like me, was unforgettable. Even though I was still an upcoming artist, I had hundreds of people waving their hands to a song they didn’t even know. That moment remains with me every day, reminding me of the power of music and connection,” she said. Zian recently released her latest song “Mukango,” featuring 76 Drums. But she doesn’t take all the credit for her success. “I have an amazing team behind me, from my dancers who make my performances exciting, to my manager, who handles my wardrobe, and my makeup artist who understands my brand, it’s a team effort,” she explains. Zian’s music style is called Zamrock, a sound that celebrates Zambian heritage. “It’s about where we come from and our journey as a people,” she says proudly. Zian is inspired by artists like Sampa the Great, and she’s dedicated to using her platform to empower girls, by celebrating their beauty and heritage. When she’s not making music, Zian stays busy working as a marketing personnel at Butterfly Entertainment, and she is also studying Mass Communication at the Information and Communication University (ICU). “Balancing music, work, and school isn’t always easy, but I’m determined to keep learning, growing, and inspiring others,” she says. Her advice for young dreamers? “Take it one step at a time, work hard, and never give up on dreams.” Keep an eye out for this rising star; she’s only just getting started!
