Hellen: Wearing many hats with grace

IT IS possible to build a meaningful career without neglecting your family,” says Hellen Mwale in her concluding message after this author chatted with her about her career journey.
Conversely, it is difficult to define her by a single career because, at just 34 years old, Hellen Mwale has worn many hats. She is ambitious; or perhaps it is more accurate to say she simply loves learning. She loves school.
In 2011, after completing Grade 12 the previous year, she enrolled at Chainama College of Health Sciences, now part of Levy Mwanawasa Medical University (LMMU), where she studied psychosocial counselling.
“As a child, I dreamed of pursuing a career where I could improve people’s lives. I was curious about health, leadership and community development. Those early dreams shaped the person I am today and inspired me to dedicate my life to serving others,” she says.
“Like many young people, my journey has not been without challenges. There were times when I faced financial constraints, career uncertainties and moments of self-doubt. I also experienced the reality that sometimes your qualifications and hard work do not immediately translate into the opportunities you hope for.”
In 2018, she returned to school, this time to pursue a Diploma in Business Administration at National Institute of Public Administration (NIPA).
“Balancing my career, studies and motherhood has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life,” says the Lusaka-based mother of two girls.
While at NIPA, she also obtained a Certificate in Diplomatic Practice, Protocol and Public Relations in 2019.
During this educational journey, she took time to explain to her children the importance of education and building a successful career. “While I am passionate about my career, I believe that family remains the foundation that gives me strength and purpose.

Balancing career responsibilities with motherhood has not always been easy, but it has taught me resilience, discipline and the importance of setting priorities,” she says. After completing her programme at NIPA, the unstoppable Hellen set her sights even higher by enrolling for a Bachelor’s degree in Development Studies at the Zambia Open University (ZAOU).
The photograph accompanying this article tells part of that story; a proud graduate whose wall is adorned with academic certificates and graduation portraits. Was that enough for her? Not at all.
Today, Hellen is a second-year Bachelor of Laws student at the University of Zambia (UNZA). This year, she also obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Monitoring and Evaluation from Cavendish University Zambia.
“The knowledge I gained inspired me to establish Triple Jee Creations Limited, an events management company that specialises in event planning and management, décor and equipment hire. “Through the company, I have been able to apply my business knowledge by managing projects, coordinating teams, engaging clients, overseeing finances and delivering professional event services.”
Above all her professional achievements, however, Hellen believes that success is measured by more than qualifications and career milestones. “For me, success is not measured only by career achievements, but also by raising a family built on love, values and integrity while making a positive impact in the lives of others.” She believes her academic journey has prepared her to make a meaningful contribution to society.
“Together, these qualifications have complemented one another, allowing me to combine business management skills with development practice and public sector governance to create sustainable impact,” she says.
